US Assistant Secretary of Defence visits GHQ, discusses regional security

The Pakistani delegation was led by Lieutenant General Sahir Shamshad Mirza, Chief of General Staff of Pakistan Army.

On January 7, a US delegation led by Mr David Helvey, Assistant Secretary of Defence for Indo-Pacific Security Affairs visited General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi to hold formal consultations on Pakistan-US Strategic Level Defence Dialogue, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) announced in a press release today. The Pakistani delegation was led by Lieutenant General Sahir Shamshad Mirza, Chief of General Staff of Pakistan Army.

“In a daylong session, issues ranging from regional security to deepening of bilateral defence and security / military to military cooperation were discussed,” said the ISPR. “The discussions were held in very cordial and constructive manner with exchange of views and ideas from both sides.”

The US Embassy in Pakistan also released a statement corroborating the report.

“Mr Helvey thanked Lt Gen Mirza for Pakistan’s ongoing role in supporting Afghanistan Peace Negotiations and discussed the urgency of reducing violence and restarting meaningful negotiations between the Islamic Republic negotiators and the Taliban,” the US Embassy said. “Mr Helvey also reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to a long-term, mutually beneficial security partnership with Pakistan, and discussed opportunities for ​strengthening cooperation on counterterrorism.”
