The UN has condemned the Taliban for its violent response to the recent protests who demanded freedom and respect for women.
Weeks after the group’s rapid takeover of Afghanistan the Taliban have been reported to have killed four people said the UN.
The UN in its report said that the group has used whips, rods, batons, and live ammunition against peaceful demonstrators.
An official for the UN High Commission for Human Rights in a statement said, “We call on the Taliban to immediately cease the use of force towards, and the arbitrary detention of, those exercising their right to peaceful assembly and the journalists covering the protests,”
UN spokeswoman Ravina Shamdasani criticized the Taliban’s crackdown on demonstrations in a press briefing on Friday.
The spokeswoman said that demonstrations have grown since 15 August adding that the Taliban banned unauthorized gatherings, and on Thursday they ordered a shut down of mobile internet in Kabul.
The UN report appeared in the midst of growing scrutiny about Afghanistan in the wake of the Taliban takeover.
On Friday, the UN’s World Food Programme indicated that 93% of households in the country were not getting enough nourishment. Further, a drought has exacerbated supply problems, causing the loss of some 40% of the wheat crop.
