Trump back on the trail: holds first rally after coronavirus diagnosis

On Monday night, Trump held his first campaign rally, eleven days after he tweeted his coronavirus diagnosis, at Sanford, Florida, a state his campaign has doubled down on since Biden was leading the polls in the summer. Trump will be back in Florida for another rally on Friday, this time in Ocala.

Trump’s decision to return to the campaign trail was met with critism from Biden, who said in a statement, “President Trump comes to Sanford today bringing nothing but reckless behavior, divisive rhetoric, and fear mongering.” He added, “but, equally dangerous is what he fails to bring: no plan to get this virus that has taken the lives of over 15,000 Floridians under control.”

President Trump claimed he is as healthy as ever, fully recovered and immune to the virus, and jokingly said to the largely packed and mask-less crowd, “I feel so powerful, I’ll walk into that audience. I’ll walk in there, I’ll kiss everyone in that audience. I’ll kiss the guys and the beautiful women – everybody.”

On Monday, America’s top infectious disease expert, Dr. Anthony Fauci said that there is no evidence of people being completely immune from the virus – although they can be for a limited period of time after fighting it – there are cases of people getting re-infected weeks or months later.

President Trump’s attitude still remains the same towards the virus, even after being hospitalized only a week prior. He told his audience there is a vaccine on the way, closer than expected. Trump claimed, “We’re delivering a safe vaccine and a rapid recovery like no one can even believe,” he added, “if you look at our upward path, no country in the world has recovered the way we have recovered.” There are 50,000 new coronavirus cases in the US every day, and it has claimed over 220,000 lives, the most in the world.

After his hour-long speech was done, The Village People’s “YMCA” started blasting through the speakers, and the President busted some moves while keeping his distance from the audience.
