Teen's dream US Open run continues

Canadian teenager Leylah Fernandez has defeated Elina Svitolina with another outclass performance and moved to the semi-final to face Aryna Sabalenka.

The Canadian teenager, who turned 19 some days ago, showcased her phenomenal power to win a tough tie-break 6-3 3-6 7-6 (7-5) against the 26-year-old Svitolina in New York.

Svitolina came back from a 5-2 deficit in the third round but failed to stop the teenager from making history.

Second seed Sabalenka outclassed French Open winner Barbora Krejcikova, 6-1 6-4.

Fernandez has beaten defending champion Naomi Osaka, 2016 winner Angelique Kerber and Olympic bronze medallist Svitolina in her unbeaten run to her first US Open semi-final.

The young Canadian has showcased unbelievable composure and calms in the tournament.

In her post-match interview, she said that she could not articulate her feelings at that moment and that she was so nervous while on the pitch.

She added, “I was honored to have a fight with Svitolina. I just told myself to go for every point. I’m glad I did.”

The 19-year old has become the youngest woman to reach the US Open’s semi-finals with her last victory.

Fernandez will now face Sabalenka, who has topped her draw and is believed to be the highest seed left in the draw for the young Fernandez.
