In a statement on Friday morning Zabihullah Mujahid, the Spokesperson of the Afghan Taliban, said the assertion by the Pentagon that the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA) is not meeting commitments under the Afghan peace agreement is unfounded.
Zabihullah further said that the IEA is fully committed to all clauses of the Doha agreement and is implementing them for their own part.
“Implementation of Doha agreement is the only solution to the ongoing conflict. We also urge the US to fully adhere to Doha agreement,” the statement added.
He was responding to the Pentagon’s press briefing on Thursday, where spokesperson John Kirby said that the Biden administration would not commit to a full drawdown of troops from Afghanistan by May because the Taliban have not honoured the commitments they made in their deal with the United States.
Following the swearing in of Biden’s administration, uncertainty has overshadowed the Afghan peace deal which was negotiated by the the Trump administration with the Afghan Taliban. Recent comments by the Biden administration officials have indicated that the US might be re-considering the peace deal struck with the Taliban.
