The Taliban have recovered gold and money worth $6.5 million from the house of Afghanistan’s former Vice President Amrullah Saleh.
A video of Taliban fighters stacking gold bricks and loads and loads of money into bags has gone viral on social media. The video in question has put the rampant corruption in Afghanistan under the Western-backed government.
In a tweet, Indian analyst Ashok Swain said that both former President Ashraf Ghani and Amrullah Saleh had fled Afghanistan with a whopping $169 million.
“President Ashraf Ghani had fled Afghanistan with $169 million. His Vice President, Amrullah Saleh had so much that he even left $6.5 million in cash & gold bricks at home before fleeing. These are the people ruling a country for the US, whose 90% population live below $2 a day,” Swain’s tweet read.
In an interview last month, Saleh blamed Pakistan for directly and indirectly supporting the Afghan Taliban. He said, “Pakistan was not just a sanctuary or safe haven for the Taliban in all these years. The entire country was at the service of the Taliban, who used the neighbouring country as their support base.”
The self-proclaimed caretaker President said, “The United States kept on paying money to Pakistan. The more they paid, the more Pakistanis became benevolent to the Taliban.
Earlier in mid-August, Saleh announced himself to be the ‘legitimate caretaker president’ of the country after former Afghan President Ashraf Ghani’s fled the country. Saleh had retreated the Panjshir Valley at the time but Afghanistan’s last holdout has also fallen to the Taliban.
