Suspect arrested in Johar Town bombing case

He is the alleged owner of the vehicle used in the bombing.

ISLAMABAD: Law enforcement agencies have arrested a suspect for his alleged involvement in a car bombing outside the residence of Lashkar-e-Taiba chief Hafiz Mohammad Saeed in Johar Town, Lahore.

The explosion had left three people and over two dozens injured besides destroying dozens of houses in the locality on Wednesday. According to the Punjab Police chief, the target of the blast could have been Saeed, but police deployed outside his residence foiled the attempt.

However, a day after the blast, authorities have traced the owner of the vehicle that was used in the bombing. Peter, a resident of Gujranwala, was on his way to board a flight for Karachi from Lahore last night when he was intercepted by security agencies, sources told The Correspondent. He was offloaded from the flight, arrested, and shifted to an unknown location, they added.

WHO WAS THE TARGET?

IG Inam Ghani, during a media talk after the attack, confirmed that the bombing happened near the residence of Hafiz Seed.

Ghani said police were guarding Saeed’s house at the time of the attack. He said the attackers might have succeeded in targeting Saeed’s home had police not set up a security post in the street where the bombing happened.

It was unclear whether the bombing caused any damage to his home, although the windows of dozens of homes were damaged. Authorities blocked passageways to Saeed’s home, citing security reasons, reported Associated Press.

Last year, Pakistan sentenced Saeed to 15 years in jail in a terror-financing case, but he was never charged in connection with the Mumbai attacks.
