South Korea’s latest offering ‘Hellbound’ shattered records by topping streaming ratings in more than 80 countries within 24 hours of its debut. The horror-fantasy beat ‘Squid Game’ as Netflix’s most popular show and became an overnight global phenomenon.

The Guardian reported that the Korean series called Hellbound has taken the crown from Squid Game as the most viewed TV show in the history of the streaming platform with its remarkable effects and production.

It is no secret that the South Korean entertainment industry is dominating showbiz in many genres with its strong scripts, cinematography, and execution of the concepts.

As of November 20, the new Korean drama had reached the highest streaming ratings in over 80 countries within 24 hours of its debut. As per FlixPatrol, Hellbound is currently the world’s most-watched television series.

The show revolves around the graphically gruesome actions of a team of demons, who hunt down sinners, that have been visited by a celestial being in the past. The said creatures have also informed the victim of their date and time of death. The giant hairy creatures also incinerate their victims and send them to hell, prompting an outbreak of public hysteria and religious zealotry.

The series has garnered immense popularity using common fantasy and childhood icons such as demons and celestials and keeping the audience hooked by portraying mysterious concepts. Directed by Yeon Sang-ho, the pilot of the series was also premiered at the 2021 Toronto international film festival in September.

Earlier, Squid Game announced that a second season of the show is being worked on due to public demand. The show was in the top ten spots of the streaming platform for more than a month after its premiere. So far, it generated an estimated $900m in profit for Netflix.

Hellbound will keep everyone engaged until Hwang Dong-hyuk drops another season of the dark and twisted show, till then we are all in for another amazing creature feature this year.
