Show of hands for Senate polls; SC issues notices to all provincial advocate generals, speaker assemblies

On Monday, a five-member bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Gulzar Ahmed issued notices to all the provincial and federal advocate.

Notices have also been issued to the speaker of National Assembly, Asad Qaiser, Chairman Senate Sajid Sanjrani, speakers of all provincial assemblies and Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

On December 23, President of Pakistan sought the opinion of the Supreme Court on holding the Senate elections through open ballet and show of hands.

Khalid Jawad Khan, the Attorney General of Pakistan had moved the reference under Article 186 of the constitution

The president had sought the court’s advice on whether the condition of the secret ballot under Article 226 of the Constitution applied to the Senate election.

In November, Prime Minister Imran Khan announced that government is thinking to hold the Senate elections by show of hands.
