Shehbaz Sharif to attend PDM’s meeting on April 26

LAHORE: Leader of Opposition Shehbaz Sharif has been granted bail by a three-member bench of the Lahore High Court (LHC) and the PML-N leader will be resuming his political activities soon. The President of the PML-N is expected to attend the next meeting of the Pakistan Democratic Movement’s (PDM) steering committee.

PDM is set to hold its next steering committee meeting on April 26 in Islamabad. PDM chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has convened an important meeting at his residence Monday evening. The meeting will discuss the overall political situation in the country and the next course of action. Two major opposition parties, PPP and ANP, have not been invited.

The meeting will discuss the anti-government movement without PPP and ANP and will also consider the long march after Eidul Fitr, the sources added.

Shehbaz Sharif’s return comes at a crucial movement as the PDM has been reduced in number after ANP and PPP exited the alliance earlier.

PDM’s woes

On April 11, the PPP had parted ways with the PDM after the latter served it a show-cause notice. PPP chairperson Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari announced that the party’s Central Executive Committee (CEC) had called upon its members to resign from all positions of the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM). He had said the CEC had come to the conclusion that resignations from the national and provincial assemblies should be “like an atom bomb”.

Bilawal said the PPP’s stance that the Opposition should “not abandon the Parliament and the Senate battleground” had been vindicated.

Shehbaz’s Bail

A three-member bench of the Lahore High Court (LHC) on Thursday unanimously granted bail to Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif in a corruption case.

His counsels Senator Azam Nazir Tarar and Amjad Pervez had completed their arguments.

The bench, headed by Justice Ali Baqar Najafi, after hearing detailed arguments announced the decision with consensus. “The bail is allowed with the consensus of colleague judges,” the justice said.

Shehbaz Sharif was arrested by the NAB on September 28, 2020, after the Lahore High Court rejected his bail plea in a money laundering case.
