KARACHI: The sacked employees of Pakistan Steel Mills (PSM) on Tuesday blocked the main railway line near Port Muhammad bin Qasim on Tuesday, suspending all rail traffic since mid-day. Despite extensive negotiations with the authorities the rail traffic could not be restored.
The fired employees of PSM have staged a sit-in at the railway track near Port Qasim, protesting against against their retrenchment from their services by the federal government through a notification a few days ago.
A large group of fired PSM employees have sat down on both tracks coming from the port – up and down – and as a result Karachi Express and Sir Syed Express are stuck at their stations stations for clearance for several hours.
The protesters are demanding that federal government take back its decision. Around 4,544 PSM employees, including teachers, drivers, firemen, operators, health and security staffers, SEDGMs, managers and others had been sacked, a spokesperson from the Steel Mill said the on Monday.
