S. Korea, U.S. start joint training amid N. Korea’s protest

Computer Simulation Training

The United States and South Korea began their annual joint military training on Monday, despite the rising tensions in North Korea and threats of a security crisis.

It is a nine day exercise largely based on computer simulation and almost no field training. The authorities emphazise that it is defensive in nature.

This year the number of troops will be limited due to the exceptional circumstances of COVID-19. The United Nations command normally notifies North Korea of the training scheduel and such details. But this year there was no formal notification.

North Korea has reacted by halting its daily hotline with South Korea. It has also accused the two countries of ignoring efforts for dialogue and peace. With a promise of dire consequences.
