Republicans divided as Trump loyals call for Liz Cheney to resign

As the US Senate is getting ready to take up President Donald Trump impeachment, there appears a deep divide in the Republicans.

Ten members, including Liz Cheney, the third ranking House Republican, voted to impeach Trump on Wednesday siding with Democrats who launched impeachment drive after Vice President Mike Pence refused to invoke 25th Amendment.

Now, there are calls for Congresswoman Cheney, the daughter of former vice president Dick, to resign her party leadership role after her vote against Trump.

Voices for Wyoming congresswoman’s resignation started rising soon after her vote in the House of Representatives.

“I’m not going anywhere. This is a vote of conscience,” she said in reply to Trump’s defenders in Congress called for her to quit.

She told media on Wednesday that “our nation is facing an unprecedented constitutional crisis.

Michigan Republican Peter Meijer told a TV channel that he and several colleagues have purchased body armour and have been forced to change their normal routines after receiving threats of violence.

He feared that someone would try to kill anyone of them.

On Wednesday, the Democratic-controlled House delivered speeches for two hours for and against the vote on impeachment. And finally the House adopted the impeachment resolution, making Trump the only president in the US history to be impeached twice.

Trump was impeached by 232 votes to 197 votes for allegedly inciting rioters who stormed the Capitol on January 6.

Interestingly, most Republicans, instead of defending Trump, argued that the impeachment had bypassed the customary hearings and called on Democrats to drop it for the sake of national unity.
