Punjab government bans slaughter of female animals

"There is a need for a complete ban on female animal slaughter in all four provinces," said Dr Maqbool Ahmed.

A notification has been issued banning the slaughter of female animals in Punjab, revealed veterinary surgeon Dr Maqbool Ahmed, adding that strict action will also be taken under the directives of the Animal Slaughter Act.

“There is a need for a complete ban on female animal slaughter in all four provinces,” he stated.

Dr Ahmed fears depletion of livestock if female animal slaughter is not banned in the country. He further believes that if the practice is allowed to resume at the current rate, animals will not remain for sacrifice.

Pakistan has reported an alarming reduction in the female animal population as a result of rising rates of slaughter. The Animal Slaughter Act of 1963 has been enforced by the government on several occasions to curb excessive slaughtering.

“No person shall slaughter an animal unless such animal has been approved as hereinafter provided, for slaughter; except in a slaughter-house and during the hours prescribed therefor..” the Act states.
