Punjab Assembly Deputy Speaker Sardar Dost Muhammad Mazari on Tuesday rescinded an earlier order and summoned assembly session at 7:30 on Wednesday evening, reported Radio Pakistan.
The deputy speaker put off the session, scheduled for Wednesday (April 6), to April 16.
He claimed the session was postponed to complete repair and maintenance work in the assembly hall.
Then, in a late-night development, some TV channels reported that the deputy speaker had superseded his earlier order and summoned the PA to meet at 7:30pm on Wednesday.
In this special session, the voting for the election of new chief minister will be held.
Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi is joint candidate of PTI and PML-Q while Hamza Shehbaz is the candidate of PML-N and allied parties for the post.
On Sunday, the session was adjourned until April 6. However, on April 5, advocate general Punjab also assured the Supreme Court that the provincial assembly would conduct a session on April 6 as per the constitution.
Subsequently hours after the advocate general Punjab’s assurance, the provincial assembly session was postponed till April 16.
The notification for holding the session on April 16 was also issued after Punjab Assembly Deputy Speaker Sardar Dost Muhammad Mazari approved the order.
In a surprise move, the deputy speaker late on Tuesday night called assembly session to elect a new chief minister on Wednesday.
A notification has also been issued in this regard, which stated that the “40th session of Punjab Assembly will now be held on Wednesday at 7:30 PM for the election of chief minister of Punjab.”
However, PML-Q leader Moonis Elahi called the notice circulating on media ‘fake’ as it did not have a diary number and was written on a plain piece of paper.
