Punjab: 890 traffic accidents in last 24 hours

At least eight people were killed whereas 973 were injured in 890 Road Traffic Crashes (RTCs) in all 36 districts of Punjab during the past 24 hours.

Out of the total injured, 584 people were seriously injured who were shifted to different hospitals. An analysis showed that 409 drivers, 50 underage drivers, 113 pedestrians, and 451 passengers were among the victims of these road traffic crashes.

The majority of accidents, around 64%, involved motorcycles.

The statistics showed that 221 RTCs were reported in Lahore, which affected 223 persons, placing the provincial capital at the top of the list, followed by 71 in Faisalabad with 76 victims and Multan at third with 55 RTCS and 63 victims.

The victims included 767 males and 206 females. The age group analysis showed that 194 were under 18 years of age, 517 were between 18 and 40 years and the rest of the 262 victims were reported to be above 40 years of age.

According to the data, 736 motorcycles, 120 auto-rickshaws, 118 motorcars, 37 vans, five-passenger buses, 30 trucks, and 109 other types of auto vehicles and slow-moving carts were involved in aforesaid road traffic accidents.

 The major reasons for the accidents can be attributed to poor road engineering and deficient road furniture, careless driving, lack of road safety awareness, inconsistent and improper law enforcement and unsafe means of pedestrian crossings.
