PTI’s Vawda resigns from National Assembly, speaker’s office says not yet received

Vawda's lawyer submitted his resignation in court and argued that with this resignation the disqualification should be dismissed

Federal Minister for Water Resources Faisal Vawda on Wednesday resigned from the National Assembly seat and submitted it to the Islamabad High Court (IHC).

Vawda’s lawyer argued that with his resignation the disqualification case has now become infructuous and should be dismissed.

The lawyer said that Vawda has resigned after casting his vote in the Senate elections.

Meanwhile, officials at the speaker’s chamber said that they have not yet received Vawda’s resignation.

An official said, on condition of anonymity, that no-one on behalf of Vawda approached the speaker’s chamber.

However, he said that according to the rules, the resignation is “confirmed” once it reaches Speaker Asad Qaiser.

And the speaker will forward the resignation to the Election Commission of Pakistan, he added.

On the other hand, Vawda said after casting his vote that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) candidate Dr Hafeez Sheikh will come on top and there is no way Yousaf Raza Gilani can win.

Faisal is also contesting the Senate elections from Sindh. Last week, his nomination papers were challenged by Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Qadir Khan Mandokhail but the election tribunal dismissed the petition.
