President Alvi calls for women empowerment

President Arif Alvi addressed the Brainstorming Session on Gender-Based Discrepancies and Promotion of Legal, Economic and Social Empowerment of Women in Islamabad on Wednesday. During this session, he emphasized the need for women empowerment via socio-economic policies and by the inhibition of cultural taboos.

Dr. Alvi stated that the event would guide the government in devising strategies on women empowerment, adding that this was also taught by the Holy Quran and Holy Prophet.

A working session on dominant issues plaguing women in Pakistan related to property rights, law, media and other sectors was carried out, which later presented its recommendations to be considered by the government.

The president addressed Issues such as insecurity at police stations, delayed disposal of divorce cases, hesitance to register harassment or rape cases, and domestic violence and said that such session would pave a way for alleviating these problems for women.

Owing to lack of awareness, the women were not properly benefiting from loans schemes exclusively announced for them to run small and medium enterprises, he said, adding that skill-based education of women was vital for the enhancement of employment.

The event was attended by federal ministers Barrister Farogh Nasim, Dr Shireen Mazari, Shafqat Mahmood, Shibli Faraz, Minister of State Zartaj Gul, special assistants Dr Sania Nishtar and Dr Faisal Sultan, Parliamentary Secretary on Law Malika Bukhari, eminent artists and media representatives.
