PPP retains both seats in Sindh by-polls, JUI-F wins in Balochistan

The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) retained both its provincial assembly seats in Karachi and Sanghar while a joint opposition candidate won the PB-20 Pishin, Balochistan, in by-elections held on Tuesday.

According to unofficial results announced by the Election Commission, Yousaf Baloch from PS-88 Malir, Karachi, and Jam Shabeer Ali from PS-43, Sanghar, won the by-election.

Violence was reported in Malir while opposition leader of Sindh Assembly Haleem Adil Sheikh was arrested for violating the orders of the ECP during the voting.

Yousaf Baloch got 24,251 votes as against Tehrik-i-Labbaik’s Kashif Shah 6,090 votes.

At least 16 independent candidates were also contesting the by-election.

The PS-88 Malir constituency had fell vacant in June 2020 due to the death of provincial minister Ghulam Murtaza Baloch.

Sindh Governor Imran Ismail strongly condemned Haleem Adil’s arrest. He tweeted that Haleem Adil is the leader of the opposition and is being treated like a criminal. “Is it a crime to contest elections in Sindh?”

In PS-43, Sanghar, Jam Shabeer Ali of the PPP defeated GDA’s Mushtaq Junejo by a wide margin. According to unofficial results, Jam Shabeer polled 48,032 votes while Mushtaq Junejo got only 6,922 votes.

Meanwhile, Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (F) candidate Syed Azizullah Agha won the PB-20 Pishin by-election.

According to unofficial results, Agha, enjoying the support of opposition alliance PDM, secured 8,742 votes. He defeated Asmat Tareen of Balochistan Awami Party who got 4,876 votes.
