PEMRA requests positive media coverage of govt’s petrol pricing ahead of ‘likely’ hike

In a notice, PEMRA requested satellite TV channels and FM radio licenses to launch an "appropriate campaign" highlighting the low petrol prices under this government.

Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has issued a notice urging the media to launch a positive campaign lauding the government’s petrol pricing policies to prepare the public for a rise in petrol prices.

“The government, being the custodian of public good, has kept petrol prices in the country at the lowest possible level compared to many countries in the region and the world,” the notice said, adding that the oil prices of the incumbent government are lower in comparison to the last two governments.

“This fact, however, has not been reflected in the news media,” PEMRA alleged.

In this notice, PEMRA requested all satellite TV channels and FM radio licenses to launch an “appropriate campaign to inform the general public about the factual [statistics] of petrol price and prepare them for a likely increase in petrol prices.”

A copy of the fact sheet and narratives of the government on the management of oil prices was enclosed alongside the notice given to the media.
