Army chief, ISI DG brief lawmakers on national security

ISLAMABAD: The in-camera meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on National Security was held at Parliament House on Thursday.

The meeting was chaired by National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser. During the meeting, the parliamentarians were briefed by the military top brass on matters related to national security. The meeting discussed the current situation in Afghanistan and its impact on Pakistan as well.

Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed, DG ISI Lieutenant General Faiz Hameed and DG ISPR Lieutenant General Babar Iftikhar also attended the meeting.

The DG ISI briefed the meeting on the internal situation in the country as well as the situation in Afghanistan, India and Occupied Kashmir.

Opposition leader Shehbaz Sharif and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari were also present in the meeting while Balochistan chief minister and Sindh chief minister were also present.

Earlier, General Bajwa reached Parliament House by a helicopter.

The employees of the National Assembly and the Senate Secretariat were sent on leave while the journalists were barred from entering the Parliament House in the light of the meeting.

The spokesman of the National Assembly said that the media “comes only when the parliament is open, what will the media people do when the parliament is closed”.

Shehbaz Sharif told media that he could give his suggestions to the committee after attending the meeting.

On the other hand, Chairman PPP Bilawal Bhutto in an informal conversation with the media representatives on his arrival in the Opposition Chamber said that first we will listen to them and then we will give our stand.

Federal Minister Fawad Chaudhry said that the Prime Minister Imran Khan would not attend the meeting. It was decided that members of the Defense and National Security Committee would attend. Leaders of political parties were asked to elect their own members. Members of the Defense and Foreign Affairs Committees will also attend the meeting.

Meanwhile, mobile phones were taken from the participants of the meeting.

A large screen for briefing has also been installed in the National Assembly Hall.
