Pakistan reports less than 3,000 cases for first time since March, deaths remain above 100

Pakistan on Wednesday reported 104 deaths and 2,869 new infections as the coronavirus cases decline across the country, with a positivity rate of 7.42 per cent.

According to the National Command and Operation Centre, out of 104 deaths, 49 died on ventilators while 15 died out of hospitals. Most deaths occurred in Punjab followed by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

In Punjab 49 people died, in Sindh, 11 people succumbed to the virus, in KP at least 24 deaths were reported. In Islamabad, two people died and in AJK one death was reported. At least 19,210 deaths have been officially recorded since the start of the pandemic.

The NCOC said in Multan the ventilator occupancy rate is 73 per cent, in Lahore, it is 63 per cent, in Gujranwala, it is 52 per cent, while in Peshawar it has dropped to 41pc. The oxygen beds occupancy rate is 64pc in Gujranwala, 60pc in Swabi, 54pc in Multan, and a mere 51pc in Peshawar.

Authorities conducted 38,616 tests on May 11. In Sindh, 12,783 tests were conducted slightly less than Punjab that conducted 14,111 tests. KP and Balochistan conducted 6,602 and 1,088 tests, respectively.

As of May 10, at least 9,631 doctors, as many as 2,313 nurses, and an estimated 4,187 healthcare staff had been affected by the virus, 156 of whom have succumbed to the disease.

Sindh accounts for 5,713 of the total cases among the healthcare professionals with 54 deaths from Covid-19. Whereas, Punjab reported 3,377 cases among frontline with 28 fatalities, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 3,879 infections and 42 deaths, Islamabad 1,459 cases and 11 deaths and Balochistan 777 infections and nine deaths.
