The victims of Samjhauta Express terrorist attack in India still await justice even after 14 years of the ghastly incident.
A Ministry of Foreign Affairs statement said that despite clear evidence, India’s continuing failure to provide justice to the victims of this horrible incident is a reconfirmation of the culture of impunity that the perpetrators of terrorist attacks enjoy in India.
While expressing solidarity with the families of the victims, the statement adds, Pakistan calls upon India to fulfil its legal obligation of bringing the perpetrators of the Samjhauta Express blasts to justice without further delay.
On 18 February, 2007, the Delhi-Lahore Samjhauta Express was attacked by extremists in India and the fire in the train after blasts resulted in the death of 68 passengers, including more than 40 Pakistanis.
Bombs were set off in two carriages filled with passengers, just after the train passed Diwana near the city of Panipat, 80 kilometres north of New Delhi.
Indian National Investigation Agency charged eight people in the terrorist attack, including Swami Aseemanand, an extremist Hindu cleric formerly affiliated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. Aseemanand was later set free on bail, while three others absconded. The alleged mastermind, Sunil Joshi, was killed in 2007. In 2019, a court acquitted all the accused.
