The notification of Hammad Azhar as Pakistan’s new finance minister has been issued by the Cabinet Division today, with the deposal of Dr Abdul Hafeez Shaikh from his former position.
Azhar, at age 38, is the youngest finance minister Pakistan has had yet. Confirming his appointment in a tweet, he said that it was his “honor” to be “entrusted with the additional charge of Finance by the Prime Minister.”
Sheikh had been serving as the finance minister under a special clause in the constitution that allows individuals not part of the parliament to serve on the federal cabinet for six months, where they are required to get elected. In case of failure, the individual can not be appointed under said clause again.
