No promotion without exams, Shafqat tells students

Federal Minister for Education Shafqat Mehmood has said examinations will not be cancelled and advised students to focus on their studies.

Talking to the media on Saturday, the minister said last year, due to the coronavirus lockdown, schools had to be closed for a long time, causing a lot of problems for students.

He categorically said there would be “no promotion” to the next grade without examinations.

“Let me make it clear that this year nobody will be promoted without examinations,” Shafqat added.

He said the Punjab government will look into the matter of schools fees, adding that the decision to reopen schools was up to the provinces.

He reiterated that examinations will be held on schedule.

Last month, Shafqat had said examinations of grades nine to twelve would take place across the country after July 10, “come what may”.

The minister, speaking on the floor of the National Assembly during the budget session, had said several problems arose last year when the government had decided not to conduct examinations.

“But now, we have decided that no grades will be awarded without examinations,” he said and added that it was “unfortunate” that some called for no examinations even now in parliament.
