No businessman will be called to NAB: Javed Iqbal

"The institution of NAB exists to be of service to the masses."

Chairman National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Justice (retd) Javed Iqbal said in a press conference on Tuesday that baseless propaganda is being levelled against the watchdog.

Speaking to media in Islamabad, Javed Iqbal said that vicious allegations were being hurled against NAB, but no amount of blackmailing or threats would become a hurdle in its way.

“No threat or blackmailing will be a hurdle in the way of the bureau [acting against those involved in corruption],” he said.

The former judge claimed that NAB had been accused of all things except spreading the coronavirus.

“Those who are involved in the propaganda are the ones facing some sort of inquiry or investigation against them,” he said.

He said that those who were deemed “untouchable” were summoned by NAB over their corruption. He said when NAB questioned these people about how they could afford plazas in Dubai when they could hardly afford Honda motorcycles a few years prior, they had no answers.

Rejecting allegations of driving the business community out of Pakistan, Javed Iqbal said that those who left did of their own accord, to pursue “better futures.”

“There’s a difference between a business and a fraud. We prioritise the interests of the businessmen and will take steps for redressing their issues,” the NAB chief said. “No businessman will be called to NAB.”

He said that the watchdog was also an answerable body, and those who felt wronged by it could approach the courts.

“We can respond to those levelling accusations against us, but we stay silent,” he said.

“The institution of NAB exists to be of service to the masses,” he concluded.
