Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supreme leader Nawaz Sharif reportedly discussed intensification of the joint opposition protests after Ramzan.
According to media reports, both leaders, in a telephone call, talked about the overall political situation in the country in the wake of the violent protests by a radical religious party. They also discussed the “unpopularity of the government” and its defeat in the Daska by-polls.
The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and Awami National Party (ANP) have already quit the PDM, weakening the joint opposition alliance significantly. The PDM had sent show-cause notices to the PPP and ANP for seeking support of the Balochistan Awami Party (BAP) lawmakers to get PPP’s Yousaf Raza Gillani elected as the NA opposition leader.
The ANP and PPP took offence to the notice and decided to part ways with the alliance and sent in their resignations to the alliance chief, Maulana Fazlur Rehman. In response, Fazl had said it was the right of the PDM to seek explanations as the alliance had always taken decisions with consensus, adding that all PDM parties were equal.
The PDM chief had offered the disgruntled parties to come back into the fold of the PDM, but the offer was ignored.
Subsequently, the PDM also removed from the alliance’s WhatsApp group.
