The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has accepted Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Miftah Ismail’s request seeking a recount of votes in the wake of rigging allegations.
According to the ECP, the votes will recounted on May 6 at 9am as it requested the representatives of the parties that contested the election to be present at the office of the RO.
Reacting to the decision, PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif said the “narrow difference in votes of the top contestants necessitated” the recount.
In NA-249 polls, PPP candidate Qadir Khan Mandokhail had bagged the seat securing 16,156 votes — a few hundred votes more than Miftah Ismail who came in second with 15,473 votes. The banned Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) candidate Nazeer Ahmed Kamalvi had received 11,125 votes, securing the third spot.
Pak Sarzameen Party (PSP) chairman Syed Mustafa Kamal had bagged 9,227 votes, while Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Amjad Afridi could only manage to grab the fifth spot with 8,922 votes.
The Karachi seat had fallen vacant after PTI leader Faisal Vawda, who was facing a disqualification case, resigned from the National Assembly to become a senator.
