JIT to investigate IHC attack, as protesting lawyers march towards D-Chowk

"No is above the law," Chief Justice of Islamabad High Court Justice Athar Minallah remarked. "The February 8 incident was unacceptable."

The Islamabad Police will constitute a joint investigation team (JIT) to investigate the February 8 attack on the Islamabad High Court (IHC).

“No is above the law,” Chief Justice of Islamabad High Court Justice Athar Minallah remarked. “The February 8 incident was unacceptable.” He emphasised that no innocent lawyer must be harassed or convicted, and pointed out that only lawyers, and no outsiders were present during the attack on the court. He added that he recognises at least half of the lawyers himself, and the Bar should thoroughly investigate and identify the lawyers that led the aggression and were involved in the hooliganism.

On February 8, a group of lawyers had attacked the building of the Islamabad High Court. They had engaged in vandalism and also broken the windows of Justice Athar Minallah’s chambers. This was in retaliation to the demolition of the lawyers’ illegally build chambers by the Capital Development Authority (CDA) a day prior.

Meanwhile, lawyers in Islamabad are protesting the demolition today by marching towards D-Chowk.

More to follow.
