India is to hold its G-20 summit in 2023 now instead of 2022, as it had previously intended.
“We look forward to our next meetings in Italy in 2021, Indonesia in 2022, India in 2023 and Brazil in 2024,” the G-20 declaration said on Sunday.
In 2018, at Argentina’s G-20 summit, it was decided that India would host the summit on its 75th independence anniversary. It was to previously host the conference in 2021 but the country’s Prime Minister wanted it to coincide with India’s 75th Independence Day.
India’s PM Narendra Modi, addressing the summit, had said, “It’s India’s 75th Independence Day in 2022 & we had requested Italy if we can get ’22 instead of ’21 (for hosting G20 summit). They accepted our request, others accepted it too. I’m grateful and I invite leadership from across the world to come to India in 2022”.
The G20 (or Group of Twenty) is an international forum for the governments and central bank governors from 19 countries and the European Union (EU). The heads of the G20 nations held summits twice in 2009 and twice in 2010. Since the November 2011 Cannes summit, G20 summits have been held annually.
