IG Punjab establishes anti-harassment and violence cells

Inspector General of the Punjab Police Inam Ghani has ordered for anti-harassment and violence cells to be operational within a week

The Punjab Police have established anti-women harassment and violence cells in all districts across the province.

Inspector General (IG) of Punjab Police Inam Ghani announced the formation of these cells while chairing a session attended by senior police officers.

The cells will ensure a response to complaints within 15 minutes and are focused on halting increasing crimes against women.

IG Punjab said that all the anti-women harassment and violence cells would be operational within a week.

Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Operations was given the responsibility to monitor the formation of the cells.

A merit-based probe will be ensured through these cells, and lady police officers will be present as victim support officers.

According to the IGP, the cells will be under the supervision of CPOs and DPOs, and an awareness campaign will be launched after the establishment of the cells.

He ordered that telephone lines be finalized to receive complaints from the citizens.

The decision comes after multiple incidents of violence and harassment against women have shocked the public.

Most recently, a woman was assaulted by a mob at Minar-e-Pakistan.

Earlier, Punjab Police had established an Android application known as “Women Safety App” which would provide help for women in emergency situations. The app contained a panic button that would prompt a quick response from the police.
