Govt will provide 70,000 scholarship annually for five years, says PM

PM Imran says Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will also provide scholarships separately.

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan launched the Rehmatul-Lil Alameen scholarship programme for intermediate and undergraduate students in Islamabad on Thursday.

Speaking on the occasion, the PM said the scholarship will be available to all Pakistanis. The PM said the federal government will annually provide Rs5.5 billion for 70,000 scholarships. He said under the scholarship programme a total of 350,000 scholarships will be provided in five years at a cost of Rs28 billion.

The PM said the provincial governments of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will also separately provide scholarships to the students.

Imran reaffirmed the commitment to strengthen the rule of law and focus on education. He said no country can move forward without bringing the powerful people under the ambit of the law.

He noted that no nation can make progress without education. The PM said the present government is especially focusing on the education sector.

The PM said under the umbrella of the Ehsaas program, several programmes have been started for the relief of under-privileged segments of the society. He said the network of ‘Koi Bhooka Na Soye’ will be expanded to the entire country.

He also commended the governments of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa for deciding to provide universal health coverage to the people.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister for Education Shafqat Mahmood said the scholarship programme will be implemented in 129 universities across the country. 

He said 50 per cent scholarships will be given to women while two per cent will go to people with disabilities.
