The federal cabinet on Tuesday approved the proposal to conduct Senate election by show of hands, Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Shibli Faraz said in a press conference following the meeting. Currently, Senate elections are held through secret balloting, and members of all four provincial assemblies take part in it.
He said the government will file a petition with the Supreme Court on the matter, and seek their advice on Article 186. He added that this decision was taken to ensure there is no trading of Senate seats.
Attorney General Khalid Javed Khan presented the proposal to the cabinet. The government further decided to hold the election in February instead of March.
