Federal govt earmarks Rs51.1bn for new hydro-power, dam projects

ISLAMABAD: In the federal budget for the fiscal year 2021-22 (FY21-22) the government has decided to spend a total of Rs51.5 billion for the construction of new damns and hydropower projects. 

The government has set aside Rs23bn for the Diamer-Bhasha dam, the highest sum for a dam in the current budget. The second highest amount has been set aside for Neelum-Jhelum worth Rs14bn. While Mohmand will receive Rs6bn and Dasu dam will have Rs8.5bn this year. 

The spending is a decrease from previous years when Pakistan faced an acute power shortage. Last year the federal government earmarked Rs177.512bn for dams and hydropower projects.

According to budget recommendations of last year, Rs164bn were to be utilized for the projects from the national exchequer while Rs13.50bn were to be arranged from foreign funding resources.
