The Federal Board of Revenue’s (FBR) software for tax collection crashed on Thursday as taxpayers scrambled to file their tax returns on the last day to file returns.

People trying to file their tax returns with the FBR on the last date set by the tax collection body were faced by a challenge as the portal crashed due to heavy traffic.

President Saddar Tax Bar Association, Zeeshan Merchant said that the website is not functioning properly as a large number of people tried to file their returns on the last day.

He added that the traders later requested the board to grant an extension for the deadline but FBR had denied the request.

Previously, the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) had put forth demands for removing the surcharge on late filers and also an extension to the set deadline with the FBR.

President of the FPCCI Nasser Hyatt Magoo said that the board should provide an extension of two months for the submission of tax returns.

“Even the Federal Board of Revenue has levied a surcharge of 0.1 percent surcharge on a daily basis which is unacceptable as it could lead to a three percent surcharge monthly and 36 percent surcharge annually,” he said.

The FPCCI chief added that the FBR should not take non-business friendly decisions without discussing the matter with the stakeholders.
