US Electoral College officially declares Biden’s victory

The US Electoral College has decisively affirmed Joe Biden as the President of the United States, amid Donald Trump’s protests and efforts to overturn the result.

“It was honest, it was free and it was fair. They saw it with their own eyes. And they wouldn’t be bullied into saying anything different.” said Biden at the time of the election.

This declaration by the College has thwarted the claim by Republicans of the election being rigged and unfair, and their refusal to acknowledge Biden as the president-elect for over a month.

The presidential electors gave Biden a solid majority of 306 electoral votes to Trump’s 232. California’s 55 electoral votes put Biden over the top. Vermont, with 3 votes, was the first state to report. Hawaii, with 4 votes, was the last.

“Once again in America, the rule of law, our Constitution, and the will of the people have prevailed. Our democracy — pushed, tested, threatened — proved to be resilient, true, and strong,” declared Biden, following his win.

The United States Electoral College is the group of presidential electors required by the Constitution to form every four years for the sole purpose of electing the president and vice president. It has been in place since 1787 and remains a widely debated topic in terms of its relevance in modern America.
