Delay expected in US troop withdrawal from Afghanistan: Biden

US President Joe Biden stated that the US troops might have to stay in Afghanistan past the withdrawal date of 31st August.

With the unexpected turn in circumstances the withdrawal plans have been disrupted. With millions of Afghans breaking into the airports in a desperate attempt to escape the country.

In face of all the criticism Biden commented “The idea that somehow there’s a way to have gotten out without chaos ensuing, I don’t know how that happens”.

Currently there are almost 15,000 US citizens stranded in Afghanistan. Although 4,500 US troops have temporary control of Karzai International Airport, it is surrounded by Taliban fighters.

Evacuating 15,000 Americans alongwith 50-65,000 Afghans will be a major task. But Biden reassured his people that “if there’s American citizens left, we’re gonna stay till we get them all out”.

The situation in Kabul is very volatile. Although the Taliban guaranteed safe passage to anyone who wants to leave. There are reports that even the citizens carrying authorisation are having difficulty entering the airport.
