Covid-19: IMF announces $650bn global funding, Pakistan to get $2.8bn

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has announced $650 billion funding for member countries, the largest in its history, to combat the Covid-19 pandemic.

A statement from the IMF said that the funding has been increased as the coronavirus pandemic has not yet been brought under control. Of the amount, $275 billion would be provided to the developing and poor countries.

According to the statement, the IMF executive board has approved the funding. It would start disbursing the amount from August 23.

Meanwhile, State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) sources said that Pakistan will likely get $2.8 billion and the amount is expected to be delivered by month-end.

PAKISTAN: Meanwhile, 67 people died in Pakistan of coronavirus, raising the nationwide tally to 23,529 on Tuesday.

About 3,582 new coronavirus cases have been recorded in the past 24 hours, according to the data issued by the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) on its official web portal.

The coronavirus positivity rate in Pakistan stood at 7.19% with 75,373 active cases across the country.

According to the NCOC data, at least 49,798 coronavirus tests were conducted across the country in the last 24 hours, and 3,582 people caught the virus.
