Coronavirus: India sets new record with over 4,000 deaths in a day

India records for the time over 4,000 death from coronavirus in a day on Saturday though the number of new infections dipped slightly.

According to ministry of health data, India registered a record rise in Covid-19 fatalities at 4,187 in the last 24 hours, taking the overall death toll in the country to 238,270.

However, the country witnessed a slight drop in new infections in the last 24 hours, with 401,078 more people testing positive for coronavirus. The total Covid-19 tally now stands at 21,892,676.

Maharashtra continues to be the worst-hit state, with the highest contribution to the daily Covid-19 tally. The state recorded 54,022 new coronavirus cases on Friday, of which 3,039 cases were reported from Mumbai.

India’s Covid-19 tally had crossed the 2 million mark on August 7, 3 million on August 23, 4 million on September 5 and 5 million on September 16.

It went past 6 million on September 28, 7 million on October 11, crossed 8 million on October 29, 9 million on November 20 and surpassed the 10 million mark on December 19.

India crossed the grim milestone of 20 million on May 4.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), 30,04,10,043 samples have been tested up to May 7 with 1,808,344 samples being tested on Friday.

COMPLETE LOCKDOWN IN TAMIL NADU: The Tamil Nadu government on Saturday announced clamping a two-week “total lockdown” across the state to curb the spread of the pandemic.

Chief Minister M K Stalin said in a statement that the lockdown was being enforced due to “unavoidable reasons” and pointed out that the decision was taken based on inputs received at a review meeting he had with district collectors on Friday, besides consultations with medical experts.

“The total lockdown will be enforced from 4am on May 10 to 4am on May 24,” he said.

Tamil Nadu saw 26,465 new coronavirus cases on Friday, pushing the caseload to more than 1.3 million while a record 197 deaths in the last 24 hours took the toll to 15,171.

According to the health department, the active cases stood at 135,355.
