Bilawal Bhutto tests positive for COVID-19, will PDM leadership go into quarantine?

Chairman Pakistan Peoples’ Party Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has tested positive for COVID-19, a day before his sister’s engagement. In a tweet on Thursday morning he revealed that he has gone into self isolation. However, he said he would continue working from home, and will address the parties foundation day event via video link.

Bilawal appealed to everyone to wear masks in his tweet.

Bilawal’s positive test raises many concerns for the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) leaders and events going forward. Bilawal attended the movement’s Peshawar rally on Sunday along with Pakistan Muslim League–Nawaz (PML-N) Vice President Maryam Nawaz, Jamiat Ulema Islam–Fazl (JUI-F) and PDM chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman. Following the rally Jameel Somoroo, spokesman of Bilawal House tested positive for COVID-19, which prompted the PPP Chairman to get tested. As such, people who attended the rally have been exposed to the virus and are at risk.

The movement leaders will have to get tested and go into self-isolation according to the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) outlined by the government, which is likely to bring its plans for mass rallies across the country to a halt.

Earlier, the 11-party alliance staged its fourth power show on Sunday in Peshawar despite being denied permission by the city administration to hold the the public rally due to a surge in new COVID-19 cases.
