Biden retains Khalilzad as special envoy for Afghan peace

The Joe Biden administration has decided to retain Zalmai Khalilzad as the US special envoy for Afghan peace, Afghan news channel Tolo reports quoting CNN.

The move is said to be “unprecedented” in American politics because, “with the change of government in the United States and the arrival of a new government in power, all political positions change.”

Khalilzad was appointed by former President Donald Trump and signed a landmark deal with the Taliban in Doha in February last year.

He visited Kabul earlier this month to meet with Afghan officials to discuss the peace process.

The Biden administration move to retain Khalilzad is a manifestation that the US wants to continue with the peace process initiated by Trump with the assistance of Pakistan.
