Asif Ali Zardari granted bail in fake accounts case

Asif Ali Zardari is accused of carrying out transactions worth Rs 8 billion

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Wednesday granted bail to former president and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari on medical grounds in the fake bank accounts case.

Furthermore, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) has stopped the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) from arresting Asif Ali Zardari.

A two-member bench headed by Justice Amir Farooq heard the case. During the proceeding, Zardari’s legal representative Farooq H. Naik said that the court hasn’t called Asif Zardari for a year. Whenever NAB calls Asif Zardari he will cooperate with NAB and we are ready to give an undertaking for that.

The Supreme Court of Pakistan has issued notices to transfer the cases to Karachi. After keeping in mind all the facts we had requested the court to transfer these cases, Farooq H. Naik further added.

On this, NAB prosecutor Muzaffar Abbasi said that NAB hasn’t requested to cancel Zardari’s previous bail. He further said that notices were sent on 10th and 16th May 2019 but no answer has been given so far.

On this point, Zardari’s lawyer rebutted that the accused was in the custody of NAB at that time.

The court after seeing the medical reports asked NAB prosecutor whether they have any objections on this. “Are you calling the reports fake? In the past medical reports have been declared fake,” the bench remarked. Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kiyani further asked Farooq H Naik that will the accuse go abroad when we grant him the bail?

On this Zardari lawyer said that, Zardari’s name is still in the Exit Control List (ECL).
