Army officers responsible for Ehsanullah Ehsan’s escape have been held accountable: DG ISPR

"Efforts are underway to arrest Ehsanullah Ehsan again"

Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) chief Major General Babar Iftikhar has said officers involved in the escape of former Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) spokesman Ehsanullah Ehsan have been thoroughly investigated, and action has been taken against those found responsible.

Speaking to journalists from foreign media organisations at his office on Wednesday, DG ISPR said that Ehsan’s escape was a “very serious” matter, and the guilty individuals have already been proceeded against.

He also said that while he was unaware of Ehsanullah Ehsan’s current whereabouts “efforts are underway to arrest him again.”

Ehsan was arrested in 2017, but escaped in January 2020 from military safe house. His capture and subsequent escape were widely publicised and the incident led to calls for accountability for the officers that allowed it to happen.

Ehasanullah Ehsan’s escape drew renewed interest recently when a Twitter account by his name threatened Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai with another attempt on her life. When asked about the threat, DG ISPR told journalists that according to his information, “the Twitter account which was used to threaten Malala was a fake account”.
