Swedish activist Greta Thunberg and American lawyer Meena Harris faced paramount backlash and hate in response to their support for farmers’ protests in India. A large number of Indians were seen burning posters of the two individuals, along with a number of others who had spoken out against India’s farm laws. However, the rebuttal seems to have only strengthened their stance.

“I still #StandWithFarmers and support their peaceful protest. No amount of hate, threats or violations of human rights will ever change that. #FarmersProtest,” read Thunberg’s tweet.

Meena Harris, niece to Kamal Harris, Vice President of the United States, stated that she won’t be ‘silenced’ or ‘intimidated’.

On Thursday, the Delhi Police filed a FIR against Greta Thunberg accusing her of conspiracy for her tweets on farmers’ protest. The 18-year-old, environmental activist Greta Thunberg has been accused of creating disorder in the country. This issue started when Thunberg shared a CNN article regarding the farmers’ protest in India. “We stand in solidarity with the #FarmersProtest in India,” Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg tweeted.

A growing cohort of predominantly Western international celebrities and significant individuals began using their social media platforms to showcase their solidarity with farmers’ protests in India.

Rihanna, the world-renowned singer, and businesswoman shared a news article related to the protests, asking: “Why aren’t we talking about this?”

India’s ruling nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) blatantly condemned international support for the farmers’ protests, viewing it as highly propagandist.

“Before rushing to comment on such matters, we would urge that the facts be ascertained, and a proper understanding of the issues at hand be undertaken,” the Indian foreign ministry stated.

“The temptation of sensationalist social media hashtags and comments, especially when resorted to by celebrities and others, is neither accurate nor responsible,” it added.
