Veteran leader of Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) and former Member National Assembly (MNA) Hafiz Salman Butt died in Lahore on Thursday night due to kidney failure at age 65. He was under treatment at the intensive care unit (ICU) of a private hospital in Lahore, after having suffered a heart attack. He is survived by a widow, two sons and two daughters besides grandchildren.

His funeral prayers will be offered today (Friday) in Mansoorah after Jumma prayers at 2:00pm.

Hafiz Salman Butt was a renowned labour and student leader, and had been elected to the National Assembly and Punjab Assembly three times since 1985. He obtained a BSc degree from the Punjab University in 1982 and took active part in students’ politics as a leader of Islami Jamiat Talaba (IJT). During this time he was elected as vice president of the Punjab University Students Union.

He was an engineer by education and as such he led Pakistan Railways Employees Union for several terms, as well as serving the vice president of the National Labour Federation. He was also an active sportsman, and had served as a member of several national sports boards since the late 1980s; such as the Pakistan Football Federation, Pakistan Swimming Federation, and Lahore District Hockey Association.
