The second installation of fictional anti-hero, Venom: Let There Be Carnage has shattered the pandemic-era box office record, previously held by “Black Widow,” which made $80 million.

Industry watcher Exhibitor Relations says, “Venom: Let There Be Carnage,” has opened at pre-pandemic levels atop the North American box office, raking in $90.1 million.

The three-day launch, which took place from Friday to Sunday, was the largest three-day launch of the coronavirus pandemic era.

British star Tom Hardy plays Eddie Brock, an investigative journalist with a symbiotic relationship with an alien called Venom.

Cletus Kasady, portrayed by Woody Harrelson, has escaped jail after merging with another alien, and Brock must stop him.

Other box office take ins

Another newcomer, “The Addams Family 2,” came in second with $18 million in ticket sales. The animated United Artists’ picture follows the scary, wacky, enigmatic, and frightening family on their vacation.

With $6 million, Disney’s blockbuster “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” fell to third place after topping the box office for four weeks in a row.

The fourth place went to the Warner Bros. prequel to the popular television series “The Sopranos,” “The Many Saints of Newark,” which grossed $5 million.

With $2.3 million, 20th Century Fox’s sci-fi comedy “Free Guy,” starring Ryan Reynolds, came sixth.

For the rest of the top ten, Candyman raked $1.2 million and Cry Macho hosted $1 million. Meanwhile, Jungle Cruise made $680,000 and Copshop $625,000.
