Umar Sheikh has been removed from the post of Lahore Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) on Friday. He has been replaced by Ghulam Mahmood Dogar.
Sheikh gained public and media attention in September 2020 for his handling of the Sialkot-Lahore Motorway gang-rape case, when he critised the survivor for her choice of traveling route and time. He was defended for his comments by Asad Umar, Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives.
Last month, the Lahore High Court (LHC) took exception to Sheikh’s statements against the courts that “discouraged the efforts of the police by releasing suspects.” He was summoned to the LHC at the next hearing for the case.
The reason for his transfer is yet indisclosed.
