UK could approve Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine this week

United Kingdom could give regulatory approval to COVID-19 vaccine made by Pfizer-BioNTech as soon as this week. It is said that British regulators are planning to start a formal appraisal of the vaccine. The National Health Service (NHS) has been directed to oversee it by December 1.

On Friday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said that they will meet on December 10 and will decide about the authorisation of the vaccine.

The authorisation process done by the medical regulator Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) is independent of the government and will take as long as they need to review the final data from Pfizer, a spokesman said.

“An enormous amount of planning has taken place to ensure our health service stands ready to roll out a COVID-19 vaccine,” the spokesman added.

UK’s medical regulator MHRA, last week was formally asked about the appropriateness of the vaccine.

The UK’s government has already ordered 40 million doses and will have 10 million at their disposal by the end of the year if the regulatory authority approves it.
