It is unrealistic to expect Turkey to bear the burden of additonal Afghan refugees for the European Union.
On Sunday, the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated that the EU had requested Turkey to open its doors to the Afghan refugees who served the European Union in Afghanistan. While the member countries themsleves refuse to host even a tiny fraction of their refugees.
Turkey is already a host to 5 million refugees and cannot add to that burden. It is hypocritical and unreasonable to expect Turkey to fulfill the EU’s responsibility. This is especially disagreeable since the EU has yet to honour the 2016 accords aimed at halting the flow of migrants to Europe.
