High Council for National Reconciliation Chairman Abdullah Abdullah has said that “temporary ceasefires” are not a permanent solution to Afghanistan problems and stressed the need for a permanent ceasefire to end the war in the country.
Commenting on the Taliban’s announcement on the ceasefire on Eid-ul-Fitr, he said: “We believe that the solution to the current crisis in the country is to speed up negotiations, declare a permanent ceasefire and end the war.”
“Previously, the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan had declared a unilateral ceasefire on Eid days and special occasions,” Abdullah said.
“Temporary ceasefires on these occasions provide a brief opportunity for people to peace but is not a fundamental and permanent solution to the country’s problems.”
Abdullah said that there is no military solution to Afghanistan’s crisis.
“The experience of the last four decades shows that the version of violence and killing is not only the solution but has added to the depth of the crisis and conflict,” he said, adding that “for this reason, no group should make a miscalculation will reach to a result by more killings and violence.”
He called on Taliban to resume talks, announce “a permanent ceasefire, end the war and bloodshed, and find political solution that us just, dignified and acceptable for all parties.”
His remarks come as Taliban announced a three-day ceasefire during Eid, according to sources said.
Sources said Taliban fighters have been instructed to stop all kinds of offensive operations across the country from the first to the third day of Eid-ul-Fitr.
